If you work at a large corporation then you probably regularly are exchanging and getting rid of old office chairs for replacements. What you probably didn't know is that there are organizations setup that will take your chairs and donate them to schools, hospitals, and nursing homes all for the use of other intervals. How this works is pretty simple and the majority of the sites will actually handle the pick up and delivery of the office chairs for no cost.
If this is something you are interested in there are a few things on the chair checklist that you need to go over to ensure that your chairs is ready for pickup. First you must check all the knobs and levers to ensure that none are extremely lose or damaged. The reason for this is that during the trip they tend to bounce a lot more on a moving truck and could end up losing parts that would be necessary for use. Imagine some old woman going to sit down in her newly donated chair only to have it over recline and her topple over the back.
It's pretty easy to do a once over to the parts I mentioned just to make sure they are stable for the ride. Second, check for any visible or protruding piece of sharp plastic anywhere on the chair that could possibly cut someone. If you find anything that could possibly hurt or cut someone then either snip it off with some scissors or if you don't have the time, simply label it with a piece of scotch tape. The organizations have in place QA checkers that go through each office chair that is donated and inspect it before sending it off to its final resting place.
Be sure to fill out a w201 Donation form for your company. These donations all fall under charitable write-offs and also occasionally receive press releases for their donations. While this shouldn't be your primary goal, it certainly feels nice to know that your donations got to help an old grandmother enjoy a new office chair for once.
Initially I mentioned a large corporate doing these type of donations but that necessarily isn't the case. If you own an ergonomic or office chair review site and you occasionally go through chairs that you are able to keep, these will also apply to you. You can go through the same steps as above and receive a nice reward in the future by paying it forward.
Not everyone gets the chance to enjoy the comfort of their own
office chairs. Many are destined to sit on hard backed chairs or benches. In fact there are some schools that don't even use chairs to sit in but are forced to sit on the cold hard ground. In America, we sometimes don't think of these things because we are spoiled and blessed. What a nice way to give back to society and to the less fortunate by giving them an
ergonomic chair.
